The Golden Paste
Paws and Turmeric

I learnt this term “Golden Paste” from the wonderful ladies at Wooga Dogs when I was researching superfood for Cookie. At that time, Cookie was getting old and ill. Read on to understand the benefits of turmeric, especially for dogs with arthritis, inflammation, digestive issues, and many more.
Key Benefits of this Colourful Spice :
1. Anti-Inflammatory Properties
Turmeric contains curcumin, a powerful compound that has anti-inflammatory effects. This can be particularly beneficial for senior dogs with joint pain or arthritis as it can help to reduce swelling and improve mobility.
2. Antioxidant Support
Curcumin is also an antioxidant, which helps combat oxidative stress and protects cells from damage caused by free radicals. This can help maintain overall health, prevent disease, and support the immune system.
3. Improved Joint Health
Golden Paste is often used as a natural remedy for joint pain and arthritis. The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of turmeric, combined with the fat in coconut oil, can support the health of your dog’s joints by alleviating stiffness and discomfort. Westies are prone to luxating patella (a condition where the kneecap dislocates or moves out of its normal position), so giving them a daily dose of golden paste will help to alleviate some of that discomfort.
4. Digestive Health
Turmeric has been shown to promote healthy digestion by reducing bloating, gas, and inflammation in the gut. It can help dogs with sensitive stomachs or digestive issues like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
5. Supports Liver Health
Curcumin may help to detoxify the liver and promote its health. It can stimulate bile production, which aids in digestion and supports liver function.
6. Natural Pain Relief
Due to its anti-inflammatory and analgesic (pain-relieving) properties, Golden Paste can act as a natural pain reliever for dogs suffering from conditions like arthritis or post-surgical recovery.
7. Boosts Immune System
The turmeric in Golden Paste has immune-boosting properties, helping to improve your dog’s overall health by making their immune system more efficient at fighting off infections and diseases.
8. Promotes Healthy Skin and Coat
The healthy fats in coconut oil can contribute to a shiny coat and healthy skin, while turmeric’s anti-inflammatory properties may help manage skin conditions like allergies, hotspots, and itching.
9. Helps with Cancer Prevention
Some studies suggest that curcumin may have anti-cancer properties. It may help prevent the growth and spread of cancer cells, although more research is needed in this area for animals.
10. Supports Healthy Weight
Turmeric has been shown to have a metabolism-boosting effect, which may help dogs maintain a healthy weight or lose excess kilos.
Recipe For Golden Paste for Dogs
Golden Paste is typically made using the following ingredients:
½ cup turmeric powder ( I bought the organic ones)
1 cup filtered water
2 teaspoons black pepper powder
1/3 cup organic coconut oil
Cooking Instructions:
Heat the water and turmeric on a low heat for 7-10 minutes, adding more water as required.
Once the turmeric water has thickened, add the black pepper and coconut oil and stir the mixture to incorporate all the ingredients.
Allow the mixture to cool.
Place it in a jar with a lid and store in the fridge. Keep for up to 2 weeks.
Note: The paste should be thick enough to stay on a spoon without dripping off too easily, but also not so thick that it’s difficult to mix with water, milk, or other liquids.
How to Give Golden Paste to Your Dog:
Golden Paste is generally safe when used in moderation. To administer it, mix a small amount into your dog’s food. The typical starting dose is about 1/4 teaspoon per 4.5kg of body weight daily, but it's always best to consult your vet for personalised advice. It’s also essential to start with small doses and gradually increase to avoid any stomach upset.
Golden Paste can be added to your pet’s food. Below is a general feeding guide.
⅛- ¼ teaspoon for small dogs
¼- ½ teaspoon for medium sized dogs
½-1 teaspoon for large dogs
The suggested dosage to work up to is approximately 15 to 20 mg per 2.2kg of body weight. An easier way to think about this is 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon per day, for every 4.5kg of weight (1/2 – 1 tsp for a 18.2kg dog). You can do this over a few weeks.
TIP: Turmeric leaves the body quickly, so it’s best to feed smaller amounts a few times a day
Important Notes:
Quality matters: Always use high-quality turmeric and coconut oil when making Golden Paste. Make sure the turmeric is free of additives and contaminants. I used organic turmeric powder.
Black Pepper: Black pepper helps increase the bioavailability of curcumin, allowing your dog to absorb more of its benefits.
Monitor for Side Effects: Some dogs may be sensitive to turmeric, so monitor for any signs of digestive upset (like diarrhoea) or allergic reactions.
As always, it’s important to consult your veterinarian before introducing new supplements or treatments into your dog’s routine, especially if they have pre-existing health conditions.
