Pets Emergency Plan
Paws and Storm
2 weeks ago, I experienced my first cyclone, and it was a wake-up call like no other. To be on the safe side, I decided to head to Brisbane, hoping to ride out the storm in a safer area. But as Cyclone Alfred loomed on the horizon, I found myself deep in preparation mode.

One thing that caught my attention was the booklet provided by the Australian government to guide residents through disasters preparedness. Among the many helpful tips, I was pleasantly surprised to find a section dedicated specifically to pets. This thoughtful inclusion made me realise just how much effort goes into ensuring the safety of our furry friends during extreme weather events.

The booklet advised checking pet-friendly shelter options in advance. If an evacuation is necessary, it’s vital to ensure pets can be safely accommodated. Many people might overlook this, but it’s crucial. Knowing where to go with your pets in tow can make all the difference. RSPCA QLD also gives out FREE Pet Safety Kit, that contains information about keeping their pets safe from harm, and an Emergency Services window sticker to let others know they have pets inside when an emergency strikes.

Reflecting on recent weather events, it’s heartening to learn that most pets were safe. Unfortunately, shelter animals were the most vulnerable, but the community truly came together to help. Thanks to the incredible efforts of foster carers, many animals in need found temporary homes while the storm passed (see photos below). Their selflessness ensured that our furry companions weren’t left out in the cold.
It’s reassuring to see how much attention is given to the care of pets in these challenging times. The collective efforts of the community during Cyclone Alfred were a testament to the love and responsibility we have for our animals.
Now that the cyclone has passed, I am glad that all pets are safe and sound. No reports of missing pets heard thus far.
