Hiking with a Random Dog on Hong Kong's Dragon's Back Trail
Paws and Trails

In February 2024, my family and I found ourselves on the iconic Dragon's Back Trail in Hong Kong, ready for a morning of hiking through lush greenery and stunning coastal views. Little did we know, the trail would bring more than just scenic beauty; it would offer an unexpected companion who would make the hike unforgettable. A random dog, as if summoned by the trail itself, decided to join us, and in doing so, turned a simple hike into a memorable adventure.
The Dragon's Back Trail: A Classic Hong Kong Hike
The Dragon’s Back Trail is one of Hong Kong’s most popular and accessible hikes, known for its sweeping views over the South China Sea and the rolling hills of the island. Starting from the To Tei Wan village and winding its way through forest paths and ridge lines, the trail offers a moderate challenge with the reward of panoramic vistas at the top. February, with its mild weather and clear skies, was the perfect time to tackle this well-known route.
The hike started as expected, with the trail gradually ascending through wooded areas, offering glimpses of the city’s skyscrapers and beaches in the distance. The air was crisp, and the trail was relatively quiet, with only a few hikers along the way. While we enjoyed the solitude, our adventure took a surprising turn.

The Arrival of a New Companion
About a quarter of the way into the hike, we were taking in the stunning views when we noticed something unusual— a dog had appeared out of nowhere, walking confidently along the path.
At first, I thought it might belong to another hiker, but as the dog trotted closer, it became evident that this was no ordinary pet. The dog, a medium-sized, scruffy creature with a coat that looked like it had seen better days, was clearly a regular to the trail.
What struck us immediately was the dog’s confidence. It wasn’t lost or scared; it seemed like it knew exactly where it was going. It made sure to mark its presence readily. Without hesitation, it continued on the path, seemingly eager to join the hike.

The arrival of an unexpected guest!
A Trail Companion with a Sense of Direction
It quickly became clear that this dog knew the trail better than we did. Every time we looked up, the dog was a few steps ahead, darting around corners or trotting along the ridge lines as if it had hiked this route countless times before. There was no sign of hesitation or confusion in its movements. It would frequently glance back at us, almost as if inviting us to keep up, before charging ahead once again.
At times, we felt like the dog was the one leading the hike, guiding us through the winding paths, stopping only to make sure we were still following. It had a kind of quiet, natural confidence, and we found ourselves wondering how many times it had made this same journey alone. Despite the dog’s apparent freedom, there was an unspoken bond forming between us. It seemed to be enjoying the hike as much as we did, and perhaps in some way, it too was seeking a connection on this winding path.
The Dog’s Brief Disappearance
As we continued, the dog stayed just out of reach, always several paces ahead. There were moments when it would disappear from view entirely, darting off into the bushes or out of sight around a corner. Each time, we wondered if we had lost our companion for good. Yet, true to form, the dog would reappear—usually at just the right moment—reminding us that it had simply chosen its own pace and path.
By the time we reached the final lap of the trail, the dog had vanished for a while. We paused at a lookout point, thinking it might be long gone. To our surprise, as we began the descent toward the end of the trail, the dog appeared once more from the bushes, as if it had never left.

Then he appeared again!
The Final Departure
As we neared the end of the Dragon’s Back Trail, the dog maintained its role as the leader of the hike, calm and content. As the trail ended, we offered the dog some food we brought along and water from the tap, as it had been out in the heat for a while and seemed thirsty. It simply took a sniff and turned away. It wasn’t interested in our offering. Instead, it looked at us one last time before turning around and walking off the path.
It was a quiet departure, almost as if it had completed its part in the journey and was now moving on to its next adventure. We stood there for a moment, watching the dog taking another route, reflecting on the unique companionship we had just experienced. Despite not knowing anything about it, the dog had brought an unexpected warmth to the hike, and its brief but meaningful presence made the hike something special.
A Memorable Journey
Hiking the Dragon’s Back Trail was something we looked forward to on this trip to Hong Kong, but sharing it with a random dog who knew the way added an unexpected layer of joy to the experience.
In the end, the dog’s brief company was a reminder that sometimes, the best adventures are the ones that come when you least expect them. The dog left behind a trail of memories that would last far longer than the hike itself.
